Round Up At South Spring, 1875. Egg tempera on Masonite.

This 4’ x16’ mural depicts a cattle roundup on a section of the John Chisum ranch near Roswell. The inspiration for the painting came from a combination of photographs made in 1875 by a German photographer and Mr. Hurd’s personal recollection of the river that used to flow into the Pecos.

This painting was a gift to the Walker AFB Officers’ Club. Peter Hurd had flown with a crew from Walker AFB in Roswell to Europe, and made the decision to paint the mural on that rather harrowing trip. The complete story is there for everyone to read, written on the dedication menu cover, November 28, 1964.
